Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 – Review

Insomniac had a very tall order when it came to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 because it had to follow up two spectacular superhero fantasies that offered a lot of heart and excitement. But, it appears that they found the solution to this problem because they have opted to double down. This applies to the map as well as the action sequences of the game and the end result is an exciting rollercoaster ride that comes with one of the best stories in the series so far.

The combat

Even though Spider-Man 2 does have some new tricks, you will realize that most of the game’s combat is quite familiar. It might not smell like a new suit, but you can slip into it comfortably. You will be satisfied with the precision dodges and their rhythm, the almost perfect parries as well as the acrobatic finishers. The fight remains as stylish as before because there is smooth movement and you can feel the crunching hits.

The moves are a combination of elegance and power, as your enemies are thrown around, slammed into floors and even slung onto each other, but are never killed. Sure, their organs may be punctured and bones broken, but they continue committing crimes.

The different approach

This time around, you will find that Spider-Man 2 has opted to not focus on stealth encounters a lot, both as Spider Man and also as Miles Morales. The stealth action that had been added in previous games was mostly routine and simplistic, due to which this louder and new approach is very appealing. Sure, there are still story missions that require Peter or Miles to sneak a little bit, but the game is more about you getting into action.

It offers you several abilities where you can group up your enemies and then inflict a lot of damage on all of them simultaneously instead of picking them out one by one. Web Grabber is a new gadget that has been added, which is designed to pull in enemies from a distance and they smack into each other. The aggressive style of play that has been incorporated is highly rewarding and enjoyable for the players.

Enemy variety

Another area where you will see some improvements is in terms of the enemy variety in Spider-Man 2. This means that you will not be dealing with the same five bullies who come at you with baseball bats. There are new units and factions that you have to deal with, such as flying drones, cultists wielding flamethrowers and hunters who use aerial attacks to target you. There are some enemies who are vulnerable to different abilities, such as symbiote or electric attacks, and this also adds a great layer to your fights.

You also get a number of takedown possibilities and there are also new toys that you can play with. The Web Line is one of them that can be used for creating highwires over the enemy. It is a lot of fun and can turn the battlefield in your favor.
