In the last few years, Motorola has churned out some impressive budget phones. There are a number of models that are part of the affordable Moto G range, with the most affordable of them being the G13.
Design and build
Considering the price of the phone, you do not expect it to use premium materials and this is exactly the case with the Moto G13. The phone boasts a plastic body, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. It means it is a light phone, given that it weighs only 183.5g, while most Android devices weight at least 200g. It is also a compact phone, as it measures 162.7 x 74.66 x 8.19mm.
This makes it a nice device to hold in your hand and is easy to carry around because of its weight. A free TPU silicon case is also provided by Motorola, which provides extra grip. There is also a cable and charger included in the box. There is a USB-C charging port, single speaker grille, 3.5mm headphone jack, microphone and volume controls around the phone. The power button also functions as a fingerprint sensor and you will also find a dual SIM card slot.
The phone is well put-together and a tidy one and it feels a lot more expensive than it actually is.
Screen and speakers
Even though the Moto G13 feels quite compact, the phone is still able to offer a 6.5-inch IPS display. While it runs at just 720p, which is on the low side, but Apple has been offering the same spec with the iPhone SE and that has not held the device back in any way. The fact that a cheap phone like Moto G13 offers a 90Hz refresh rate is undoubtedly impressive. Overall, the display is undoubtedly excellent for the price.
As far as the sound is concerned, the bottom edge is where a dedicated speaker is available and it offers a stereo setup in combination with the earpiece above the display. It produces decent audio, as long as you do not like things too loud. The phone is certainly able to produce some volume, but the sound gets distorted if cranked up too high. It works for social media and YouTube videos, but if you want to listen to music or stream movies, then it is best to use the 3.5mm headphone jack.
Specs and performance
Motorola has opted to use the MediaTek Helio G85 to power the Moto G13 and it is an acceptable choice, given the price of the phone. The phone is capable of running regular apps at a normal pace, but graphic-heavy pages is where the phone struggles. The same happens in the case of gaming. The processor is combined with 4GB of RAM to offer you decent performance for everyday tasks. As long as you do not intend to do intense tasks, you will not notice any major sluggishness.
The Verdict
Anyone on a strict budget can get the Moto G13 priced at $180 that offers decent performance, an excellent battery life and expandable storage.
