Sony has once more decided to try its luck in the portable market, but it has opted to not come up with a sequel to the PlayStation Vita. Instead, it has come up with the PlayStation Portal that depends on the PlayStation 5, essentially making it a streaming machine for the Remote Play feature.
The design and build
The size of the PlayStation Portal is the first thing you will notice because it is big. It is about 30cm and is also considerably deeper because the screen seems to be like the extended version of the dual sense controller of the PS5. The controller’s niceties remain intact, such as the USB-C port for charging, gyro, 3.5mm headphone jack, microphone and the resistor in the shoulder buttons. The functions of the trackpad are available on the screen as touch.
The joysticks are a bit smaller, but the most important thing you will realize is that the PlayStation Portal is a lot more comfortable to hold. Since it has the shape of a controller, it fits in your hands easily and it is easy to reach all the buttons and use them. The Portal weighs 529 grams, which is twice as much as a controller, but it does not feel heavier.
Connectivity
Since the PlayStation Portal does not have any significant performance, it can only stream the gameplay from the PlayStation5 through the router. Therefore, it has to have a good internet connection. You can use both wired and wireless connections, but the latter may experience some streaming issues. But, for the most part, your gaming experience will remain smooth.
However, you should bear in mind that playing on the PlayStation Portal is not the same as your experience on the console. As long as the conditions are right, you will not experience any disturbances that can lead to lower resolution and stuttering. But, control is where you will experience some delays. Unfortunately, there is no support for Wi-Fi 6 and direct connection with the console is not possible, so the data has to go through the router.
The additions
The most prominent thing about the PlayStation Portal is that it does not offer anything unique. Essentially, it is meant to use the Remote Play feature that you can use on smartphones and tablets. But, it is an entirely different league because there is no hassle with Bluetooth connection or holders and no slow apps or messages. It is the perfect solution when you want to play when the TV is occupied, or you do not need the big screen.
As a matter of fact, the PlayStation Portal actually makes it more fun for you to use the Remote Play feature that the PlayStation5 has to offer.
The Verdict
Even though many might view the PlayStation Portal as an unnecessary accessory for the PlayStation5, you will not want to stop using it once you get it. It comes with a 1080p 8-inch screen and built-in control that can help you have a smooth and fun gaming experience.
