Mobvoi’s TicWatch Pro 5 is immediately going to make an impression because it offers a much bigger display as compared to other watches with the same price tag. It is not exactly subtle, but it offers more space for WearOS 3 notifications and apps. There are several watch face options offered by Mobvoi that allow you to add in lots of data, or you can also go with minimalistic faces. Regardless, the large display is a great addition, as it has enough room for an on-screen keyboard for you to reply to texts.
Even though it was released last Spring, the TicWatch Pro 5 comes with the Snapdragon W5 Plus chip from Qualcomm, which is relatively newer and gives the watch’s performance a solid boost.
Design and build
The TicWatch Pro 5 can be found in two colors, which are Obsidian and Sandstone. There is a crown given that can be used for accessing the apps and scrolling through the menus. The watch weighs 44.3 grams, which is hefty, but lighter than other options like the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic. The rear is where you will find health sensors for blood oxygen, heart rate and skin temperature. There is no ECG feature included.
The charging cable of the TicWatch Pro 5 magnetically attaches to the rear left side and this gives it a slight hump. It comes with an always-on screen option for reducing battery draining. It is the ultralow-power display that has also been offered on prior TicWatch models. The screen only appears when the AMOLED is off and it boasts a monochrome look that has a backlight, which you can customize. You can see basic information like the heart rate and time. You can tap on the screen for switching on the AMOLED display, or just rotate your wrist when you receive a notification.
Software
Even though it runs on WearOS 3, the TicWatch Pro 5 does not sync with the Google WearOS app. Instead, it syncs with the Mobvoi Health app, which is quite capable. You can find the results of any workouts, health, or sleep measurements. In fact, it even estimates the recovery time you need after a workout.
The Mobvoi Health app is able to sync data with Google Fit and this can be used for syncing data to other services. The suite of health applications available are a bit confusing. In addition, there are also some TicWatch apps that feel useless or duplicative. They can often feel overwhelming, given the amount of data they provide.
If you do not like these apps, you can install alternates through the Google Play Store. But, support for Google Assistant is not available. Instead, you can install Amazon‘s Alexa. Moreover, the TicWatch Pro 5 is only compatible with Android devices and not iOS, which might be disappointing.
The Verdict
For a price tag of $350, you can get a lot of value from the TicWatch Pro 5, but you do need to be aware of the compromises it makes. The big display is certainly an advantage, as is the long battery life.
