Part of the Super-branded mid-generation graphics card refresh that was launched at CES 2024, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Super is priced the same as the original GeForce RTX 4070 at $599. The card has only gotten better, with a slightly higher power consumption, but with more cores.
The offerings
In the last there to four years, the rising costs of graphics card has become a major pitfall, especially in the mid-range. This is where the Nvidia RTX 4070 Super stands out because it has kept the cost reasonable and it is a solid graphics card in the mid-range. As compared to the original RTX 4070, the new one offers 10 more Streaming Multiprocessors, which increases the CUDA cores from 5,888 to 7,168. This ensures that the card can deliver better performance, particularly at higher resolutions.
Specs and design
The Ada Lovelace graphics microarchitecture is used for the RTX 4070 Super and it is built on 56 Streaming Multiprocessors and they include 224 Tensor Cores, 56 RT (ray tracing) cores and 7,168 CUDA cores. This gives raw silicon a 21% boost and increases the total graphics power from 200W to 220W. A VRAM boost is also evident, both in bandwidth and capacity. The GPU comes with 12GB of GDDR6X VRAM, which makes the RTX 4070 Super a much better upgrade to the RTX 4070.
Visually, the silhouette is unchanged, but the RTX 4070 Super logo has been changed from gray to black. While the change is minor, but it does look nicer. It is unchanged in terms of ports, as there is still the 16-pin 12VHPWR connector, but there is an adapter in the box that can be used for converting two 8-pin power connectors to a single 16-pin one. There is one HDMI 2.1 connector and three DisplayPort 1.4 connectors.
As far as the cooling solution is concerned, it is still the same as the RTX 4000 graphics card lineup. Instead of two fans on one side, there is one on the back and one on the front. This means that hot air shoots out from the top of the PC case, while cool air is pulled in through the bottom.
Performance
At its core, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Super works best when you use it for playing games at 1440p and when high refresh rates are needed. The graphics card manages to surpass its predecessor in every way in terms of performance. While it does not reach to the level of the RTX 4070 Ti, but it is quite powerful. You can get between 90 and 100fps in almost any game you play.
As a matter of fact, you will find that the graphics card is fast enough to justify breaking into 4K gaming, particularly when you are playing high-end games. It delivers excellent performance across the board, which should have been delivered by its predecessor as well.
The Verdict
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Super delivers top-notch performance for a graphics card priced at just $600 and it can be considered future-proof.
