Turnip Body Commits Tax Evasion was released back in 2021 and its absurd sense of humor, combined with its cutesy style was undoubtedly appealing. But, it was a three-hour campaign that got quite repetitive. Turnip Boy Robs a Bank is its sequel and while it may not have a great name like its predecessor, it gets even more memorable and ridiculous. This is because Turnip Boy gets a lot of guns and is ready to take down monsters and cops to find acceptance, riches and something mysterious.
While the follow-up is certainly not longer, it does provide some quality-of-life improvements, fast-paced action and cleaned up combat that are improvements over the original.
The story
Turnip Body Robs a Bank starts not long after the events of the first game end, as it is revealed that our lovely, cherubic protagonist actually has mafia blood, as his father was the infamous Don Turnipchino. To understand the character dynamics, you do need to know a few details of the previous game. But, the most important detail is that the secret final boss of the original, God Onion plays a vital role in this one.
Turnip Boy ends up tearing up a bunch of documents, embraces his mafia heritage and stands up to Mayor Onion at the end of the first game, but it starts an apocalyptic war. Even though most of this game takes place within a bank, the war is hanging over everything. This creates some great opportunities to bring back characters from the first game in various situations and with some changed personalities.
The difference
The big major difference between the two games is that the first one had light combat and puzzle solving because it is a dungeon crawler. The second one, on the other hand, is a roguelite and is laden with combat. A gun is the first item that Turnip Boy gets and not long after, the character gets into a truck, rams into the bank and begins killing. The purpose is to collect money and to find the larger cache that is hidden within a bank.
Unfortunately, you cannot spend long inside because cops will come into the bank within three minutes and this makes escape more difficult. If you try to fight the timer, Stinky, the bank owner, will unleash gas to kill you. This means that you have to collect as many resources as possible in order to get out fast.
The interesting elements
While the game may have switched genres entirely, Turnip Boy remains the silent hero who charms you with his permanent grin. He still hilariously does not react to anything that happens in the world around him, but he does not turn down anyone who needs help. You will still have optional and long-winded errands for NPCs, such as finding rings for helping two berries in getting engaged. While these are optional, but completing them gets you a hat and an achievement.
The Verdict
Turnip Boy Robs a Bank is not much longer than the first game, but it comes with a complete overhaul that makes it better.
