Since multi-console gaming is becoming increasingly common, it can be difficult for players to manage audio and inputs in a single main display. This is where Logitech has introduced the Astro A50 X, as this gaming headset comes with a redesigned base that not only acts as its charger, but also as a multi-input HDMI 2.1 switcher.
Design and Build
In terms of looks, the Astro A50 X are identical to the Logitech A50 headphones that are a favorite of gamers. If you were looking for any redesign improvement in the series, this is not it. But, there is an advantage, as it means that the first, or third-party accessories that were developed for the original A50 will work with the new one, which include replacement earcups.
Similar to its predecessor, the A50 X come with large squared-off earcups that have a height adjustment bar above them that connects to the headband. There is a boom arm on the left for holding the microphone, which mutes automatically when you flip it up. There is a Voice/Game volume toggle on the right side, while the back boasts an array of a master volume rocker, two buttons and a power switch.
Even though the layout is similar, functionality has changed. The EQ and Dolby Atmos audio buttons have been replaced with Bluetooth and source switcher buttons. The latter enables you to command the HDMI 2.1 switcher in the base to switch to a different source of input, such as PC, Xbox, or PlayStation.
The Switcher
The charging base of the A50 X has been fully redesigned and boasts two HDMI 2.1 input ports, which come with a USB-C port for audio. There is also an HDMI out, along with the power port and a third USB-C for PC connection. You can decide which HDMI input you want to use on your connected display with a button on the side of the headset. The switcher that has been built into the charging case commands the visual on the first two and audio on all three.
Sound Quality
In terms of sound, the Logitech Astro A50 X are perfectly acceptable, as the sound is somewhere in the middle of the road for music and gaming. This means that it achieves a nice balance when you want to use them for play or work. They have middling highs, but great mids and good bass. They also offer an excellent level of detail.
The sound quality for television, music and movies is a lot better than expected and you can also dial in the EQ as per your preference. It can be managed through Logitech’s G app and the changes you make are saved automatically. In fact, you can also make adjustments to the EQ of the microphone and there are a few built-in options given for you to choose from. The app also gives you control over the mic sidetone and game to chat mix.
The Verdict
As compared to other headphones in the market, the Logitech Astro A50 X earphones are expensive, but the fact that they can be used for multiple consoles justifies the price.
