In 2021, OnePlus made its debut in the smartwatch world and it was off to a rocky start. Because the first model had lots of bugs and was lacking in features. But, it has now returned with a follow-up model and has opted for a major shake-up, especially in terms of software.
Design and build
You can get the Fluororubber strap in Radiant Steel and Black Steel, which matches the color options of the OnePlus 12. It is a nice touch for those who are part of the OnePlus ecosystem. Silver stainless steel is used to make the chassis and this gives the watch a premium feel and look. But, this also means that the device is heavy, as it weighs 49g and is about 12mm thick. If you are looking for something lightweight and slim, this watch is not for you.
The watch does have a rotating crown, but it does not control navigation; it is just for show. Clicking it leads you to the app drawer and you can activate Google Assistant with a long press. There is a button underneath the crown that lets you access workouts, while you can control the power with a long-press.
Screen and audio
Thanks to the size of the watch, you get to enjoy a 1.43-inch AMOLED display. The black bezel is big, but that does not matter, considering the size. It has a resolution of 466 x 466 and is also very bright. You can enjoy vivid and sharp colors and the 60Hz refresh rate means that navigation is smooth. The taps and swipes are very responsive.
If your phone is nearby, you can take phone calls on the watch and people will be able to hear you clearly. The Google Assistant voice recognition is also top-notch. The speaker is not too loud or impressive, but it does the job.
Specs and performance
The OnePlus Watch 2 is actually powered by 2 chips, which is quite unique. This has been defined as the ‘Dual-Engine Architecture’. The Snapdragon W5 has been added for performance purposes, while you can get a better battery life with the BES2700. It comes with 2GB RAM and storage of 32GB is provided.
You can enjoy responsive and rapid day-to-day performance and there is also NCF support for contactless payments and Bluetooth 5.0 available. You will not find an LTE option, which means the watch can only be used for texts and calls.
Software
OnePlus Watch 2 has adopted the Google’s wearable operating system i.e. OS 4.0 and this makes navigation intuitive, simple and smooth. The watch boasts a tile layout similar to that of the Apple Watch, but you have the option of changing things like opting for a list format. All standard Google apps are available and third-party apps like WhatsApp and Spotify can also be found. You can also sync notifications from your phone and you can reply on the watch, but this only applies to specific apps.
The Verdict
There is a lot to like about the OnePlus 2 Watch, given that it has a premium build and is durable. Plus, it has one of the best battery life amongst wearables.
