PDP Realmz Wireless Controllers – Review

Collectible wireless controllers are not exactly a new concept, as many are regularly introduced, but PDP has opted to take things forward with its Realmz line of Switch controllers. This is because they come with an actual figurine of Sonic the Hedgehog inside and a multi-layered and transparent design for promoting a sense of immersion and depth.

Design and Features

The PDP Realmz Wireless Controller has been designed for Nintendo Switch and is has managed to strike a good balance between a usable controller and a collector’s item. This controller is an excellent choice for Sonic fans. It comes with multiple designs that feature locations and characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

There is a small detailed figurine inside every controller, mounted on the left and there are color-matched thumbsticks and face buttons. There is a transparent enclosure and a multi-layered design that depicts different levels from the Sonic franchise. You can appreciate the fine details, thanks to the clear shell and the different layers create a three-dimensional effect.

You can find both wired and wireless variants of the PDP Realmz controllers. As it is primarily made of plastic, the controller is very lightweight at about 160 grams. The controller stems are short and stubby, so they may seem more suitable for kids. The face buttons have a good sound when you press them and there is minimal wiggle. The D-pad is also very responsive and sturdy.

There are blue digital triggers and shoulder buttons on the top and they have a satisfying click. The top also has a USB-C port that can be used for charging the built-in battery and it can last for 40 hours on one charge. You will also find a small button used for pairing to your console.

Other than the designs, the Realmz controllers also come with different customizable lighting modes. There is a breathing mode, static lighting mode and illuminating the controller. A Controller Mode is given to help you keep the LED lights of the controller illuminated when it is connected to the console.

Software

You do not need any additional software for pairing the PDP Realmz controller wireless to the Nintendo Switch.

Gaming

Since the Realmz controller is very lightweight, it means that you will not feel fatigue during extended gaming sessions. But, it does get a bit slipper because of its plastic shell. You will not come across any vibration because there are no motion controls, or rumble motors provided. This might make games seem less immersive because you will not feel any sensation in the controller.

Since digital triggers have been used instead of analog ones, the controls will be different. However, this will depend on the game you play, as not every game will let you feel the difference. For the most part, it functions like a capable controller and is also very good to use.
