The Acer Predator Triton 17 X is a fantastic-looking gaming laptop, is built from premium materials and comes with a Mini LED screen. It is surprisingly heavy and this is mostly due to the high-end gaming grunt contained within it.
Design and Keyboard
Even though it is huge, the Acer Predator Triton 17 X seems to be quite unobtrusive by gaming laptop standards. It is made of CNC-milled aluminum, which measures 358 x 280 x 29mm and the top of the keyboard and grill comes with some elegant detailing. When it comes to RGB lighting, it is programmable for every key. The use of aluminum makes it feel bulletproof, but it feels hefty given that it weighs 3kg.
As far as connectivity is concerned, you will find most ports on the sides. These include the Thunderbolt 4, USB 3.2 Gen 2 and 2.5Gbit Ethernet ports and power socket on the left, while the right has Thunderbolt 4, USB 3.2 Gen 2 and HDMI 2.1 ports. There is also a full-sized SD card slot on the right, while the left boasts a 3.5mm audio socket. You also get Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, which ensures high-speed wired and wireless networking.
The keyboard may seem a bit odd because Acer has chosen to forgo the numeric pad, despite the space available. The normal keys have been spaced out and a column of media and gaming function keys has been added on the right. There is also a dedicated Acer Predator key to open the Predator Sense utility. The keyboard is a quiet one with tactile feedback, excellent travel and good response. The touchpad measures 13.5cm and has a fingerprint sensor. It is very smooth and handles multi-touch gestures smoothly.
Display and Sound
While a 17-inch display is not new for a gaming laptop, Acer has done things differently by opting for an aspect ratio of 16:10 and a resolution of 2560 x 1600. This makes the screen seem bigger than it already is. The Mini LED screen means you can enjoy solid brightness and it is capable of handling refresh rates as high as 250Hz. The laptop is not only great for gaming, but also for content creation.
The audio experience also matches the visual due to the combination of side-firing and forward-firing speakers that deliver a powerful sound. Even at ordinary volume levels, the sound is quite impressive.
Performance
The Acer Predator Triton 17 X is a powerhouse and this is not surprising, given the use of the Core i9-13900HX CPU, 32GB of DDR5 RAM and the RTX 4090 GPU. This means 16 efficiency cores and 8 performance cores that can deliver a smashing performance. The laptop is no slouch when it comes to handling heavy workloads and it can deliver high frame rates in the most demanding of games. The device does get a bit warm, so you may not be able to keep it on your lap for long. It also comes with plenty of storage, as there is a 2TB Micron SSD.
The Verdict
While faster gaming laptops may exist, none can offer the well-rounded package that the Acer Predator Triton 17 X offers at a premium price.
