The Turtle Beach React-R is a wired third-party Xbox controller. It is certainly not a lot to look at and feels cheap as well, but it offers genuine utility that makes it a great purchase. It does not have to be a backup controller and can prove to be a wise investment.
Design
First things first, the Turtle Beach React-R controller offers you relatively diverse color options, even if some combinations seem gaudy. Therefore, you can immediately tell that it is a cheap third-party controller. Every pad comes with texture incorporated into the stems to offer improved grip. As far as button placement and layout are concerned, there is nothing out of the ordinary except for the Turtle Beach control hub at the top.
It should be noted that the Turtle Beach React-R controller is wired, so wireless play is not possible. But, you can detach the wire. There is a darkened section on the pad that comprises of the Superhuman Hearing toggle. You will also find a microphone mute button and there is another that can be used for assigning quick-action buttons for triggering media controls.
Performance
While the Turtle Beach React-R is cheap, but it does not make compromises in terms of performance. You will have no complaints because it does not introduce any unwanted inputs in your gameplay. Even though the build quality is not very reassuring, the actual feel is undoubtedly strong. You might find the face buttons to be a bit stiff and they are also a bit loud. If you are looking for the silent and soft combination, you will not find it here.
You also need a bit of force to use them and the same applies to the full-circle D-Pad. It has a large recess in the middle for cupping your thumb and is aggressively raised. As far as the main triggers are concerned, they are just lose and large enough to ensure great use. They protrude out well and are curved, which means they do not feel clunky at all. In addition, they are also textured and pronounced and this ensures a comfortable grip.
Software
The Turtle Beach React-R does not require a software. Four quick presses from the front is enough to assign the back buttons. The on-device toggle is enough for unique audio manipulation and the media key modifiers on the D-Pad will be ready to rock. You can tweak things with the Xbox controller app, or the Turtle Beach PC software. They are great for remapping the whole controller as well. You will not find any fancy lighting on the controller. This means that individual profiles will not have any personal flair. It is not very surprising, given the price tag.
The Verdict
If you are looking for a round D-Pad without burning a hole in your pocket, the Turtle Beach React-R will do the trick. Anyone who is tired of the stock option will find this one to be an inexpensive solution.
