Razer has come up with the Kishi Ultra mobile gaming controller for delivering a true console experience. As mobile gaming is evolving into more console-like experiences, robust controllers have become more essential than ever. However, gaming on your smartphone or tablet can be quite a messy experience due to subpar controls, awkward phone clips and latency issues.
Design
The Kishi Ultra is a modified version of Razer’s Wolverine V2 controller that has been cut in half to slot in a tablet, or phone. It provides you the console experience in the palm of your hand and still boasts features that you would expect in a modern controller. Not only does it have excellent controls, but it can also be integrated with the Razer Nexus app. This provides a home screen-like experience including cloud streaming services, mobile games and remote play options.
It enables you to switch between different games and services, or use the dedicated Razer Nexus button on the front to return to the app. There are two offset analog sticks that have anti-friction rings and a concave design for helping you keep your thumbs in place when you are gaming. They are very responsive and snappy and there is a plastic ring near the base that enables 360-degree smooth rotation.
The Mecha-Tactile face buttons are one of the great features of the Razer Kishi Ultra because of their responsiveness. They do not have any wiggle and are very bouncy. There are also L1 and R1 buttons on top of the controller and their contouring allows you to press them easily. There are also full-size dual analog triggers behind the shoulder buttons. You will also find two customizable L4 and R4 buttons between the analog triggers and shoulder buttons
Features
The D-pad on the Razer Kishi Ultra has a circular 8-way design that is great for fighting games. The circular and convex shape is serviceable. Like the face buttons, you will find it responsive and clicky and there is not a lot of travel between inputs. There is also a menu button, home button and options button that can be used for navigating the Razer Nexus app.
There is also some RGB, given that it is a Razer product. The edge of the controller has a thin curved LED that gives a subtle pop of color. You ca customize the colors and lighting effects via button shortcuts, or through the app.
A USB-C connection is used for connecting to devices. You can use it with devices that have a screen size of 8 inches. There are interchangeable rubber cushions included. Thanks to the USB-C connection, you do not have to worry about latency. Plus, since you connect it directly to your device, you do not have to charge the controller. There is also a built-in 3.5mm auxiliary port for anyone who wants to use wired headphones.
The Verdict
Razer has done an outstanding job with the Kishi Ultra. It is capable of delivering a fantastic experience for anyone who wants to experience gaming on the go.
